About ECL German A2

What it is: The ECL German exam at level A2, from the European Consortium for Language Certificates.
Level: A2Elementary. You can manage routine tasks like shopping, appointments and directions.
Who needs it: People who need proof of elementary German for an authority that accepts ECL A2. ECL says German visa procedures recognise its A2 to C1 certificates; the embassy decides for your visa type, so check with the receiving authority.
Who runs it: A licensed ECL exam site
Format: Four modules: reading 35 min, writing 35 min, listening about 20 to 25 min, speaking about 15 to 18 min in pairs (a group of three when numbers are odd). From August 2026 each module counts separately and needs 60%.
Fee: Set by the local exam site, so prices vary.
How to register: With the exam site. Registration usually closes about four weeks before the exam, and the deadline is strict.
Seats: ECL does not publish seat counts.
Results: By email no later than 30 days after the written modules. No expiry date. The receiving body may set its own rules.
Study time: Typical guidance: 200 to 350 lessons of 45 minutes (Goethe).
