About ECL German C1

What it is: The ECL German exam at level C1, from the European Consortium for Language Certificates.
Level: C1Advanced. You can read demanding texts and speak fluently without searching for words.
Who needs it: People who need proof of advanced general German where the receiving authority accepts ECL C1, including the German visa uses ECL names; check with the receiving authority. ECL C1 is not a general university admission test: ask the university before you book for study.
Who runs it: A licensed ECL exam site
Format: Four modules: reading 45 min, writing 75 min, listening about 35 to 40 min, speaking about 18 to 20 min in pairs (a group of three when numbers are odd). From August 2026 each module counts separately and needs 60%.
Fee: Set by the local exam site, so prices vary.
How to register: With the exam site. Registration usually closes about four weeks before the exam, and the deadline is strict.
Seats: ECL does not publish seat counts.
Results: By email no later than 30 days after the written modules. No expiry date. The receiving body may set its own rules.
Study time: Typical guidance: 800 to 1,000 lessons of 45 minutes (Goethe).
