About ECL German B2

What it is: The ECL German exam at level B2, from the European Consortium for Language Certificates.
Level: B2Upper intermediate. You can follow complex texts and talk fluently with native speakers.
Who needs it: Nurses: Bavaria's nursing office, for example, asks for B2 before it issues the licence. It accepts Goethe, telc, ÖSD and TestDaF certificates, and ECL for exams from December 2020. Doctors: B2 general German is the entry requirement for the C1 medical language test. German-taught university degrees usually need more than B2: DSH-2 or TestDaF with TDN 4 in all four parts.
Who runs it: A licensed ECL exam site
Format: Four modules: reading, writing, listening, speaking. Pass mark 60% per module. From August 2026 the modules count separately.
Fee: Set by the local exam site, so prices vary.
How to register: With the exam site. Registration usually closes about four weeks before the exam, and the deadline is strict.
Seats: ECL does not publish seat counts.
Results: By email no later than 30 days after the written modules. No expiry date. The receiving body may set its own rules.
Study time: Typical guidance: 600 to 800 lessons of 45 minutes (Goethe).
